Raxco's PerfectDisk 7.0 Defragmentation Software
By Farmboyzim
I thought I would clue you folks in on something that I use to keep my computer looking cleaner than my office! It's PerfectDisk 7.0 by Raxco. This software does a great job of "putting everything in its place"! I have tried the free trial versions of other defrag software, and found PerfectDisk to do the best job! There was about a 2 week interval between the time that my free trial was up for PerfectDisk, and the time that I downloaded the software for permanent use. Let me tell you, that if you haven't defragged in awhile, you may be in for a surprise. I just thought of my Mom telling me to clean up my room when I was a kid! If there had been a "Perfect Room" clean up utility back then, I would have saved my allowance for it! Just after two weeks of just using the onboard defragger that comes with the computer software, there were still holes in my hard drive that you could run a truck through! What causes this massive fragmentation on my computer is the fact that I receive lots of products to review, and without an external hard drive to keep them stored, I have to dump them out of the system to make room for other "stuff". Even with a 160 GB HD, these products take up quite a bit of room! Dumping them creates those holes on your drive. Here's an analogy for you that I found helpful in understanding the fragmentation concept; Imagine your hard drive as one long street with vehicles of varying sizes parked along it. There's a little compact car, behind it a pickup truck, then another small car, and whoa, behind it a huge Recreational Vehicle, taking up at least three parking spaces! Behind it another car, etc., you get the idea. Now, imagine that the huge RV pulls out of its space and proceeds on to there destination, wherever that may be, probably a gas station to fill up the monster! What happens is that in this town, the parking laws say that you can't pull into an empty space, but you must go to the end of the line and park there! Not a very bright law! Your hard disc is like that street. When you dump something out, it leaves a void on the disc that won't be filled, since the new add on or whatever must go to the end of the disc and load. As you can see, this leaves "parking spaces" or gaps throughout the disc, wasting space. What PerfectDisk does is it comes in and puts all the files and folders in the correct places so the cpu doesn't take extra time searching all over your HD for them, and it consolidates your space on the drive, as if a huge bulldozer came along and shoved all the cars into one neat row (well, with a bulldozer, you can only be so neat!), freeing up huge amounts of "parking spaces" for other "vehicles"/software to "park". It took about an hour for my drive to defrag, and afterwards the improvement in performance was quite noticable! Faster operation! I defrag at least once a day now, and it takes considerably less time than the initial defrag! Things run a whole lot smoother! Defragging is an essential part of your computer maintenance. So why not just use the defragger that comes with the computer. Because it doesn't "dig" deep enough! Below you'll find all the specs on how, what, and why it works. The folks at Raxco can explain the tech part of it better than I can!
If you're not defragging at all, you are making a serious maintenance blunder! Using the example of a vehicle again, it's like changing your oil and such. Preventive maintenance prevents poor performance! PerfectDisk, I found, does the best job of "cleaning up" your hard drive space! For us "Flight Simmers" out there, smooth performance is a definite must to achieve the realism that todays products afford to us. Here's what Raxco has to say about their great product:

Built for the largest of disk drives, PerfectDisk provides the most comprehensive solution for defragmentation by optimizing virtually every file on the system, including all metadata, paging files, and directories. PerfectDisk's patented SMART Placement™ technology arranges files on a disk to ensure that free space is consolidated and the future rate of fragmentation is minimized. All in a single pass, not with outdated multipass technology- once and done.
Whether home computer, workstation or server, PerfectDisk will defragment the largest drives faster and more efficiently than any other product, resulting in a faster-performing computer and a more productive user experience. And you don't need to be concerned about the size of the drive - PerfectDisk can handle it. And leave you with an optimized drive that will refragment more slowly. Plus, you won't pay a premium to defragment large drives. And that saves you money.
Fewer resources are required to run PerfectDisk than are required using a defragmenter that runs over and over and merely whittles away at the problem. Multi-pass technology is defragmentation for the 20th century. Single pass defragmenting is the future. Once and done.
Results in slower rates of refragmentation of drives. Because PerfectDisk leaves the largest possible blocks of free space, new files that are created are much more likely to be created contiguously (that is, not fragmented). PerfectDisk has set the standard on free space defragmentation.
PerfectDisk's SMART Placement™ optimization strategy results in faster subsequent defragmentation runs because many of the files on the drive do not need to be moved at all, since they are placed according to. Typical defragmenters waste resources by constantly moving all files around on the drive.
Less wasted disk space than with typical deframenters, which require up to 20% of the drive to be free.
Allows you to track fragmentation to see if it is getting better or worse on certain systems.
Fewer resources are consumed in subsequent defragmentation runs because of PerfectDisk's patented SMART Placement optimization strategy. This means you can do more, and do it more quickly.
Because PerfectDisk defragments ALL metadata, you have as defragmented a drive as possible. Other defragmenters do not defragment all of the NTFS metadata. And more alarming, other defragmenters do not even report on the files they do not defragment.
You get the complete picture of the state of your drive. With other defragmenters, since you don't have statistics on all files, you're missing some of the story
You will see a 5%-10% performance improvement over other defragmenters. Microsoft has specific guidelines for placement of the MFT for this improved performance, and only PerfectDisk follows these guidelines
No file or directory is left fragmented, so you'll have better performance.
Easy to keep up with PerfectDisk updates.
Not limited to certain commands, as you are with other defragmenters. This ability to utilize all PerfectDisk commands gives you even more ability to control
PerfectDisk and tailor according to your specific requirements.
Saves computer resources, freeing them for other needs and applications.
